Charlotte swimmers hope to make Olympic splash
By Scott Fowler
If Charlotte is going to make a big splash at the 2012 Summer Olympics, it will come in the sport of swimming.
More than 30 swimmers with Charlotte connections have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Maybe a half-dozen will see their Olympic dream fulfilled, earning a spot on the American team that will compete in London starting in late July.
For lap after lap, year after year, through 4 a.m. wakeup calls and twice-a-day practices, these swimmers have sliced through the water in obscurity. Now their moment approaches. Charlotte’s UltraSwim meet that runs Thursday through Sunday represents the last major tuneup for most of them before the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., begin June 25.
